Knickers

2nd Half 1930s

Silk, trimmed and embroidered with silk

The knickers in this image, and the nightdress seen as a Related Item, represent a quality of underwear far superior to that of the camiknickers and two piece underwear set also included on this website. Made of silk and intricately handsewn throughout, they were destined for the high end of the market or possibly part of a wedding trousseau. Well into the 20th Century, such undergarments and nightwear were lovingly sewn by skilled members of the bride’s family, or purchased ready made from expensive shops, and often carefully kept for the duration of the marriage.

The knickers (a contemporary term) are made of a luxurious weight of silk, handsewn with french seams, bound scalloped hems, embroidery, and a gusset oversewn with stitches so small as to be scarcely discernible. They are cut to fit well around the waist and upper hips, and with a gusset that is more sophisticated than the simple band of our camiknickers.
