Although it is not attributed, this jaunty design of colourful flags over a ground of rousing script is very characteristic of the work of Arnold Lever, chief designer at Jacqmar. ‘England expects that every man will do his duty’, repeated continuously over the scarf, was the signal sent by Horatio Nelson from his ship HMS Victory at the commencement of the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. His victory gave the United Kingdom control over the seas and removed the threat of foreign invasion and conquest. These words would have had particular significance for the people of Britain during the Second World War.
