This folding fan represents the neoclassical tastes of the late 18th Century, in this case with a clear ‘love’ theme. The cream silk leaf is adorned with three polychrome intaglio printed paper roundels depicting three different scenes. On the left, two winged cupids hover around a cornucopia in an Arcadian landscape next to a fire urn. At the centre, a man and woman in antiquity-inspired garments are grouped around a large parchment onto which the man is writing underneath a tree. On the right side a young boy and young girl are drinking wine in a landscape as cupid is approaching in the sky with a torch and a wreath. The ground of the leaf is embroidered with garlands of gold and silver spangles. Even the pierced ivory monture matches the theme: it is carved with painted black cartouches with cupid torches and arrows spanning over several sticks. The guard sticks are underlaid with gold foil that sparkles through the pierced designs. The sticks are joint with a facetted paste stone washers at the rounded head.
